Snow Fluff: Surface Tension Science Experiment
What is surface tension? Check out this short video from BBC Earth Lab to learn about surface tension and then do the science experiment below to see surface tension in practice!
Materials:
- 1 cup corn starch
- 1 cup shaving cream
- Food Coloring
Instructions:
- Pour the cup of corn starch into a large bowl. Use a spoon to scoop the shaving cream on top of it. Put 5-10 drops of food coloring on top. Stir to mix.
- When the mixture looks like grated cheese, use your hands to squish the mixture even more.
- Pretty soon the shaving cream and corn starch will form a ball, about the same texture as dough.
- If your mixture is really wet and sticky after mixing, it needs a little more corn starch. If it won’t stick together and falls into pieces, add a little more shaving cream.
- That’s it! Try sculpting snow angels, snowmen, or make a tiny snow fort!
How does it work?
The tiny pieces of corn starch get mixed into the shaving cream and suspended in the mixture. Shaving cream is made of tiny tiny bubbles, and the surface tension on the surface of the bubbles helps ‘float’ the corn starch particles when the two mix.

Voting Rights & the Legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer
2020 is both an election year and the 150th anniversary of the passage of the 15th Amendment (Which reads “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”), making it an important time to consider the history of voting rights in the United States. The struggle for the ballot is emblematic of the struggle to make real the democratic promises of this country’s founding narrative. Just as the United States has never been a true “government by the people, for the people,” the right to vote has always been incomplete, contested, and compromised by the racism, sexism, classism, and xenophobia of policymakers and the interests they act to protect. In a moment of renewed and insidious voter suppression, examining the history of voting rights also presents an opportunity to challenge the deeply entrenched fable of the steady forward progress of U.S. history. Voting rights have expanded in the last 400 years, but they have also been taken away, requiring activists to rise up, again and again, to restore the achievements of prior generations. The fight for the ballot is ongoing.
Recent elections have brought forth the old problem of voter suppression in a new guise — voter ID laws, voter roll purges, polling places shuttered. As activists combat these restrictive, antidemocratic measures, we too should take up these issues and consider our place, our role, and our duty to fight for the right to vote for all Americans. SMU Dedman School of Law professor Grant M. Hayden has written:
“The history of voting in the United States has not been characterized by a smooth and inexorable progress toward universal political participation. It has instead been much messier, littered with periods of both expansion and retraction of the franchise with respect to many groups of potential voters.”
To learn more about the Civil Rights struggle in the US and the struggle to ensure access to the ballot box, let’s begin with two short videos from Crash Course that speak about the legacy of the Civil Rights movement:
After the Civil War and during the Jim Crow era, White supremacists across the US devised ways to keep Black Americans from voting including Voting Literacy Tests. Take a look at this actual Louisiana Voting Literacy Test from the 1960s and see if you could answer the questions. Keep in mind that regardless of how individuals actually answered or responded to the questions, it was up to the test proctor to interpret your answers.
After watching the Crash Course videos, take the time to think about voting rights in the US and ask yourself “What should be requirements for voting in the US?” Spend five minutes free writing your ideas out. Some requirement examples to consider: age, education, knowledge, literacy, language, citizenship.

For the Whole Family
Welcome Guardians! You are doing a great job!
Dear Families,
We know it’s hard being quarantined, suddenly becoming a teacher, counselor, coach, activities coordinator, IT technician, chef and cafeteria lady, college admissions counselor, job coach, mentor, and parent all in one. We see you, and we know how hard you’re trying.
See, the thing is, whether you are a parent, caregiver, guardian, foster parent, auntie, tío, or grandparent, you are giving your child the most important thing for their development: your time and attention.
The most important thing for a child’s development, at any age, is a safe, stable relationship with a caring adult. That’s YOU. Even though we can’t go see friends, go to school, go to Boys & Girls Club, do sports, outdoor school, or anything else, the child you love is getting all of you, and that’s the best possible thing you can provide them with.
We also want to assure you that even though school is out for the rest of the year, and you are probably not a teacher or any of the other stuff, your child can still learn.
Conversations during sidewalk chalk, DIY slime videos, planting a bean seed in recycled container on the window sill, writing Thank You letters, doing daily Kahoot challenges, these are all learning. One of the most important ways children learn is through play and discovery. When they get to play with their learning, and when they get to discover things for themselves, it stimulates their creativity, it gets them excited about learning more, and it builds trust and self-confidence!
When all our kids return back to school, they will learn, they will catch up if they need to, and they will be ok. Schools and teachers will be able to help, we will be here by your side helping to. During this break your children will have learned curiosity, self-confidence, new problem solving skills, and self motivation that will vault them back into academics. Most importantly what they will have gotten during this time is a deeper connection with you, which will be better for their development and wellbeing than anything else could.
You’re doing a great job.
