We’re Renaming the Wattles Club!
Nominations are now closed. We look forward to choosing a distinguished honoree soon.
PCC Structurals, Inc. (“PCC”) has made a transformative investment in Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metro Area (“BGCP”) to create a 10-year collaborative partnership that starts with the renaming of the Wattles Boys & Girls Club facility in the Lents neighborhood located in SE Portland.
“I grew up attending the Wattles Club when I was a youth, so the Club holds a special place in my life. I would not be where I am as a business leader if it were not for my growing up as a Club Kid there in the Lents neighborhood. Renaming the Club after a legacy leader of color from our community provides a unique opportunity to pay homage to someone who is a model of success for the youth we serve in marginalized and resilient communities.”
In addition to PCC making a transformative financial investment in BGCP, together BGCP and PCC will take a unique approach to the renaming process. The Wattles Club will be renamed after a legacy leader of color who has made significant impact on the Portland community over the years through youth development, education, business, state legislature, or community service. A renaming committee – including a cross-section of BGCP representatives, PCC representatives, and community members – will decide upon an honoree over the next 6 weeks. The honoree, in which the Club will be renamed after, will be announced in July, and a subsequent community celebratory event will be held in September 2023.
“We are extremely excited about this partnership and opportunity to rename the Wattles Club after a dynamic community leader in Portland. This is a uniquely significant moment for us because the Wattles Club is our flagship location where we established our very first stand-alone club in 1954 by converting the old Lents Elementary school into a Club after we were initially founded in 1946. So, we’ve been serving the Greater Portland Area for 77 years, but directly serving the Lents neighborhood for 70 years at this particular location.”
The Wattles Club is located at 9330 SE Harold St. in the Lents neighborhood and is one of 10 Clubs operated by Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metro serving Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties. BGCP impacts approximately 6,000 youth and families each year through in-club afterschool programming and a variety of community outreach events and activities, including health clinics, back-to-school, and cultural events.
